Meet the Doctor

Hi, I'm James.

I've spent more than 15 years tuning and repairing pianos, from family uprights that have been passed down through generations to concert grands in Dunedin's halls and churches.

I know a piano is often more than an instrument. It holds memories. When I come into your home, I'll take my time, explain what I'm doing in plain English, and treat your piano as carefully as if it were my own.

When you get in touch, you'll always talk to me directly. No call centre, no middleman, just honest advice from someone who loves what they do.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does a tuning take?

Most jobs take about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the condition of the piano and whether it needs any repairs. You'll know what to expect before we arrive.

How often should my piano be tuned?

For most home pianos, once a year is ideal. If it's played a lot, or lives in a room that changes temperature with the seasons, twice a year keeps it sounding its best. Dunedin's cold, damp winters and heat pumps can make strings drift faster than you'd think.

My piano hasn't been played in years. Is it worth saving?

Very often, yes. Many older pianos just need a pitch raise and a little attention to come back to life. After a quick chat about its condition, we'll give you an honest opinion. If it isn't worth the money, we'll tell you.

Why aren't your prices listed online?

Every piano is different. A recently tuned piano needs far less work than one that's been sitting for twenty years. A short chat lets us give you an accurate quote up front, so there are no surprises on the day.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive?

Just clear anything off the top of the piano and, if possible, keep the room fairly quiet while we work. That's it. You're welcome to stay and watch, too.

Do you travel outside Dunedin?

Yes. We're based in Dunedin and work across the city every week, and we also travel throughout wider Otago. Let us know where you are and we'll include any travel in your quote.
